midsummer madness

Things have been busy here lately, hence my going a full week between recent posts without even realizing it. I’m still around, just working on multiple house projects (preparing the master bathroom for painting, cleaning out the third bedroom for baby, etc) and gestating (almost 25 weeks!) and enjoying summer with my favorite goofballs…

Here’s a run down of what we’ve been up to recently:

Last Friday: George and I finally finished Season 1 of Lost. YES, I KNOW, we are miles and miles behind the band wagon on this. And yes, we are now TOTALLY ADDICTED. Ha!
Last Saturday: Oliver’s 3rd birthday! We already had his party the previous weekend, so it was nice to have a more laid-back day for his actual birthday. I made his birthday video in time, but I’m still working on his birthday letter.
Yesterday: Bridal shower for a longtime friend of mine. There were about 30 guests and it was FOUR HOURS LONG. (Is that pretty normal? I think mine was only 2 hours… I’m not one for a big fuss!) My pregnant butt was hurting afterwards.
Today: Oliver’s 3-year checkup. He’s a little over 40″ tall and exactly 40 lb (about 95th percentile in height and weight) and perfectly healthy both physically and developmentally.
Tuesday: My 25-week OB appointment, complete with the 1-hour glucose screening test. Then I get to work in the afternoon. Not looking forward to either.
Wednesday: George’s work picnic. During Oliver’s nap time, OF COURSE.
Thursday and Friday: I’m working. We are now short-staffed by two, soon to be three, people. Meaning my next few months before leaving are going to suck, because I’ll be working extra days (and extra hard) as I get bigger and more tired.
Saturday: Depending on the weather, we hope to take Oliver up to Lake Erie. It’s not exactly an ideal beach, but I think he’ll love the sand and the waves. Maybe next year we can take him to the ocean… we’ll see!

August promises to be just as busy: George will be visiting Gettysburg with a friend one weekend, I have a bridal shower and a wedding to attend, and my dad’s football season begins. George will also be in class again: to fulfill credit requirements before applying to take the Patent Bar Exam next year—and hopefully improve his chances at getting a damn attorney job!—he needs two more (freaking UNDERGRAD) science classes, so he’s taking one class in the fall and one in the spring. (Yes, he has BSCS and a JD degrees, and he will be taking FRESHMEN PHYSICS I and II. It’s totally asinine.)

I feel bad for him… he is so frustrated that after all the time and work he put into law school, not to mention the massive student loans we’ll be paying back for the next decade, he can’t get a job yet. He ran into a former classmate of his last week, one of the very few who actually got an attorney position after passing the bar last year, whose law firm had to cut everyone’s salary by 25% this spring. That is a HUGE pay cut! “I’m making less now than I did as an engineer,” he told George. “WHY did I bother going to law school, again?” George has stopped looking at job postings for now; he wants to wait until after the new baby is born. And maybe it’s better this way, in the end. By next year, hopefully both the job market and the housing market will improve, and our family will be ready for any new opportunities that come our way.

For now, I’ll be busy continuing to potty train Oliver (no accidents in 10 days, WOOHOO!) and preparing the house for the arrival of both the baby AND George’s mom, who will be flying in from Hungary in November. I have an ever-growing to-do list and never enough time or energy, it seems. If only I could get someone else to do all the cooking and cleaning and Oliver-chasing for a while, I’d get a lot more done! heh. I have no idea how it will go when I have to figure in breast feeding and not sleeping… I think I’d better keep my mind focused just on July for now so I don’t go crazy!

Wow, you are super busy! :)

That’s how long my bridal shower was. We all just sat around and chatted while doing everything else as well.

That’s excellent about Oliver! Yay!!
