discoveries

Things I learned over the past four days:

  • Wake Forest University is in North Carolina. For years, I thought it was in Washington. Oops.
  • My husband can JUMP. I’ve known him over 10½ years now, and I had no idea. But it’s sort of hot.
  • My brother Philip lost 30 lb since August! He was never “fat” (he’s 6’4″ tall, so the extra weight was pretty spread out! heh), but he was always on the chubby side (15-20 lb overweight) just like I was for many years. Here is a photo of us in 2002:

The funny thing is, he was able to lose the weight doing the exact same thing I did (by working out most days and eating a low-carb/low-sugar diet) and he reached the 30-pounds-lost mark at the exact same age I did (26). I guess we share more than looks—our metabolisms are apparently very similar, too. I’m just really glad to see that he’s healthier AND happier now.
  • My dad was a really good football player in high school. He’s a great coach (won the Division I Ohio State high school football championship in 1990, and made 4 playoff appearances since), but he never talks about playing in high school. It’s just by chance that a friend of my sister’s has two uncles who went to his high school a few years before he did, but they remember going back to games and watching my dad play, and they told her he was really good. (And he was actually a wide receiver, not a quarterback as I’d always imagined.) It’s funny how you learn things about your own family!
  • My baby still needs me. George and I were supposed to meet my sisters and their husbands for dinner Friday night, but we stayed home because Oliver had a really weird freak-out about half an hour before we had to leave (and he didn’t even know we were going anywhere yet). Out of nowhere, he started crying and trying to burrow into my side on the couch, his blanket over his head to hide him. I asked him what was the matter, but he just kept crying and holding on to me—and Oliver NEVER cries—let alone snuggles with me!—unless something is really wrong. He answered no when I asked if his tummy hurt, and he didn’t want George or my parents to sit by him. Finally he looked up at me pleadingly and asked between sobs, “Should Mama make Oliver happy?” (I know.) (I know!) It broke my heart, but at the same time, I was glad that he wanted ME and believed I could make everything all better. I didn’t know what else to do, so I just held him and talked to him until he calmed down. (Within half an hour he was completely back to normal, so I still have no idea what upset him so much…?) My mom came back in the room with a cup of milk for him, and he announced with a smile, “Mama made Oliver HAPPY.” I have never felt so accomplished in all my life.

Did George jump that high from a standing position?! That is really high!!!
Oliver is so sweet. That really warmed my heart reading that! I’d like to believe that it will always be Mama who makes things all better for the kids.
Congrats to your brother for the weight loss. That is great!

Priscillas last blog post..THE LAST DAY, I MADE IT!!!!

What made him jump in the first place? I never have thought about it. I think if I tried to jump I would probably pee my pants.

Kids: They pull at your heart strings, but when they are “all better” you feel like you can take care of everything. It makes the really bad days go away, doesn’t it?

Julies last blog post..36 week appointment

@Priscilla: Yes, that jump is from a standing position! Isn’t that crazy?? ha!

@Julie: Oliver was practicing “hopping” like a bunny, so he asked me & George to hop too, and George hopped… and Oliver said, “should Dadda jump REAWWY high?” and he DID! I was stunned! Apparently he ran hurdles on the track team when he came here to the U.S. for 12th grade. I can’t get over it!

And yes, I loved feeling like SuperMom. :) For once! lol

oh man, that is an adorable story about Oliver! I wonder what his freak-out was? Very strange!

HOLY CRAP can George Jump – that’s like 3 feet high or something eh? Did he jump from a stand still position? CRAZY!

You & your brother look GREAT! Kudos to both of you for your weight loss efforts. Oliver looks JUST LIKE your brother. :)

That’s cute about Oliver still wanting you. I love that feeling too.

NVM my question – I read it in the previous comments. Wow, what a talent George!

Hehe. Love the jumping picture. I can count on one hand the number of times in Andrew’s life I have been the one who can comfort him – usually if he’s upset, just about anybody will do. So I know exactly how you must have felt. :)

This is off subject, but keep my cousin Mary in your thoughts. She suffered a miscarriage similar to yours the first time she got pregnant last year (later than yours, so my evangelical Baptist cousin had to have an abortion to remove her dead child), and last night she went into premature labor with her second child, not due until late January. They were able to stop the contractions and she is home now, but she was 2cm dilated at the hospital. At this point, the baby weighs about 4 lbs.

The only thing she has ever really wanted her entire life was to be a mother. This has been devastating for her.

Isn’t it fun to hear stories about your parents from their old friends?!?! I found out that my dad was a wild man!!!

Wierd question, but in the picture of George jumping (mad ups, by the way!) there’s a barn in the lower right corner… What brand is it, and do you have any idea what store it came from? My mom is looking for a barn for Bridget for Chirstmas, and wants one with a silo. (My parent’s barn has a silo, so she wants to be as acurate to Papa and Grammy’s barn as possible!) :) THANKS
